Oh My God This Is Happening: Week XXVI

It has been almost exactly two months, and we’re finally seeing it! The snake plant leaf ‘cutting’ is growing roots! What a time to be alive!

At this point it looks as if the little dude is growing wee legs, like a mini Ent. One could also suggest that the set looks like a pair of fluffy antennae on a moth. It’ll be fascinating to see how they develop, and I’ll keep you all posted along the way.

Now that the roots are starting to emerge (right on schedule, regardless of my impatience), I need to prepare for the next steps to help it along. First, it would be conducive for root expansion if the leaf is suspended in the water, rather than sitting on its bottom. This provision calls for either a means of clipping the leaf in place, or replacing the water cup with a vessel having a narrower opening on which the leaf edges can site. I opted for the latter, and sourced the best option I could from my house. It’s a smaller glass, so I will need to top up the water more frequently. The glass is blue opaque, which I’ve read can be better for root health – mimicking natural buried environment, protecting roots from sunlight and algae growth – but I’ve also read that advantage to be a myth (but no explanation given). I watched an eight week video experiment of propagation into a clear glass and an opaque glass, using three sprigs for each, all from the same Golden Pothos parent plant. The results of this one trial indicated almost no difference in the root development. I may find a better suited glass later for the snake plant leaf, but for now I think it safe to stick with the fancy blue shot glass.

We will wait for the roots to extend about an inch, and then repot into soil.
